Bicycle Ad Dresser

This little tiny dresser was purchased at a yard sale two weeks ago.  It was actually the main reason I even stopped at their sale... the rest of their junk was just that... junk!

It was a little too shabby without very much chic!  I know some people may have liked it just the way it was, but really, the paint was kind of gross.

So, I gave it a good sanding, then several coats of white paint.  The white was a little too crisp looking for the piece, so I did something I don't normally do.  After applying the clear wax, I used some aging wax, and it added just the right dimension.  I used Americana Chalky Finish Paint by DecoArt.  It's quite thick and has great coverage.  I love it!

I also added that fun bicycle ad to the top drawer.  It's hand painted on and the image is from the Graphics Fairy.

I couldn't figure out how to get the pulls off, so they had to stay.  They weren't screwed through so maybe they're glued on?  Who knows!

It's such a unique size. I think it may be handmade possibly.   It would make a great nightstand or side table, even.  I can picture it in a small entry as a great drop-spot, too.

And just for fun, here's a look at my second attempt.  The all white as seen above was actually the third attempt! Sometimes it just takes a little experimentation to get things right.
I first painted the top black, but found that while I love black and white, the contrast just felt too stark for this piece.  Then, the next morning I dry brushed some blue over the black and on the first drawer.  Umm... yeah, that just looked terrible!  So, I got out the paint again and painted everything white.

How many times does it take you to get the right look?

  1. I have a lingerie dresser with very similiar drawer fronts and knobs. It was my mother's and she had it I'm pretty sure in the 1940s. My dresser has a lot more drawers than yours though.

  2. Gorgeous makeover! I wish I could hand paint something but I'm just awful! I did not getting the painting genes from my Dad. Love the image you chose too!
