Okay, confession time... I've stored this ottoman since last summer, waiting for a rainy day to tackle it. Well, there's been plenty of rainy days since then, really, I was just scared of the upholstery. Lately, I've been trying to get done some of my older projects to make way for all the new ones I will find with the upcoming garage sale season. So, this stool got hauled out from the closet for me to experiment with.
I admit, upholstery scares me halfway to france. Which, is probably why I put it off so long. But once I got going on it, it wasn't all that bad.
This is what the stool started out like:
Once I ripped off all the old fabric, and took out all the staples, I was left with this...
Because the foam was a little squished, I added two layers of fleece before I stapled on two layers of burlap. I used two layers of burlap because my fleeces was blue, and could be seen through if I only used one layer.
I then stapled on burlap to cover up the bottom... You can also see how I did the corners on this picture.
I then hotglued on a piece of folded burlap around all four edges to cover up the mess on the sides.
Upholstery tacks were placed evenly around the top and bottom edges to give it a finished look. After wrecking a half dozen tacks by hammering them in crooked, I asked my dad what to do, and he suggested holding them with a needle nosed plier. Which worked perfectly... Thanks pops!
This picture shows how I measured between tacks! My fingers worked great for that! And yes, I have a pink hammer :-)
After it was done, it still really needed something to make it standout.
Hmm... This might look okay! I printed out the numbers and cut them out to give me an idea of what they would like. I really didn't want to wreck all my hard work.
I made a stencil out of freezer paper to apply the numbers.
I crossed my fingers, hoping it worked out okay...
Yess!! But it still needed something more, so I decided to add the stripes. They were just done with painter's tape.
I took it up with me when we visited my parent's last week and my brother and I had a little photo session with it outside.
He thought it was a little strange that I wanted to take pictures of a stool in the outdoors.
But, he does lovely nature photography...

Go visit him... he would love it!

This stool was a lot of work, but I am really happy with the end result and am wishing I had a spot to
keep it.

Cynthia, This is absolutely beautiful! I would love for you to share this at our link party http://herestohandyandy.blogspot.com/2012/04/pinteresting-link-party-week-37.html
ReplyDeleteI love your adorable stool.
ReplyDeleteDee
You just can't go wrong with burlap. The stencil design is such a nice touch. Love it!
ReplyDeleteNice Job! I really like this. Love the burlap around the edges.
ReplyDeleteThat is really cool. I love that you added the numbers and the stripe. Just what it needed!
ReplyDeleteI really really like this! It makes me want to start hunting an ottoman! I think that looks totally doable and I think your embellishments really make this something special -
ReplyDeletebreida
Looks really great--love your stenciling job!
ReplyDeleteNice job! My husband is obsessing over burlap right now & he wants to do a foot stool next. Wait till he sees this! Dee from My Painted Stuff
ReplyDeleteWow! I love it!!! What a great idea to use freezer paper for stenciling! You did a beautiful job. I would have been really nervous when it got to the stenciling part too after all that hard work! Thank you so much for joining in the fun at Rustic Restorations Weekend's #1 Party! :)
ReplyDeleteWow - this looks great, and I love the stencilling!
ReplyDeleteLOVE how this turned out! The stripes with the numbers looks great together!
ReplyDeleteWow, that turned out so cute! Great job! :)
ReplyDeleteTania
This is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWow! What a transformation! I love everything about it.....the burlap, stencils, and upholstery tacks.
ReplyDeleteLove the stool...thanks for posting it on MMS. I have a question, is there wood along the top for the upholstery tacks?...Coreen
ReplyDeleteHi Coreen... Yes, actually the cushion part of this ottoman was a "wooden box" with foam placed around all the edges, so it was easy enough to make the tacks stay in!
DeleteLove it just picked up a round one for $2 I want to make like this
ReplyDeleteWe (meaning my son and I) both LOVED this! In fact, he insisted we had to have it in our own home. :) Looks like our own ottomans are about to get revamped. Love the look and your tutorial is fantastic! Thanks!!

Great! I really luv the way you did the sides...never would have thought of that myself...thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteso cool, are the nail heads along the top only in foam? I would love to do this but upholstery makes me nervous too!
ReplyDeleteHi... the tacks actually were able to go into the "wooden box" part of this ottoman. If they were only able to go into the foam, they wouldn't stay in place. (I know that from experience!)
DeleteAmazing transformation Cynthia!! I love this! Love the burlap, the numbers and the stripes! You have inspired me to try Freezer Paper stencils, you make it look so easy! Take care! Heather :)
ReplyDeleteCynthia--I love the addition of the stripes... great job on your ottoman!
ReplyDeletegail

That is just awesome! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm following you now and hopefully you'll follow me too.
ReplyDeleteI love the ottoman you did a fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteCouple of questions:
ReplyDelete1. Do you wash the burlap first? I ask because after touching burlap I have evidence all over my clothing and didn't want an ottoman that would shed if someone sat on it.
2. On the stenciling, did you use acrylic paints?
It is gorgeous and I love it!!!
Can anyone say wow!
