I bought this table at the end of last summer. You can read about all the other amazing things I scored here. It was painted a bright, mustardy yellow.
Now, I now some people would totally have loved the colour, and the paint wasn't all that bad, either. However, I knew that underneath all that paint was a lovely solid oak table. I originally wanted to strip it down to the original wood. I have a beautiful antique oak secretary desk that we use for our laptop and I was thinking this table would look nice sitting beside it holding the printer. However, after spending several afternoons and not even having half of the top stripped, I decided it would be next to impossible to get all the paint out of the grain. I have stripped quarter sawn oak sucessfully in the past , so I'm not exactly sure what went wrong with this table.
So, I eventually just gave the table a good sanding and painted it this fun shade of turquoisey/blue.
I am a little disapointed that I didn't finish out my original plan, but I really do love it in this colour. It's so bright and cheerful looking.
I love the fun details of it: The spool like legs and the unique shape of the shelf...
I distressed it just a little bit to give it a bit of a lived in look, and to let the yellow peek through a tad.
Right now it's holding my printer... but I don't think it's the perfect table for the space after all. That's the great thing about redoing furniture, though... You can always be switching things up!

Love the blue!
ReplyDeleteMaybe the table had been stripped before the yellow paint went on. That would put the paint pretty far into the wood. It does look sweet in the blue! ~ Maureen

Cynthnia,
ReplyDeleteI like the color too, and how the yellow peaks through. I'm happy to hear that other DIYers have mis-steps too, either in the process or the intended location for the new piece.
I just painted my front porch bench, from black to what I thought was going to be a cool blue/gray color. After I finished, I stepped back and realized I painted it country blue -not what I was going for.
I'm visiting from the Shabby Nest linky party and I hope that you can stop by my blog as well. :)
Thanks for sharing,
Laura
Hi, Cynthia, I love your table! It's such a pretty color too! Do you have an email address where I can write you?
ReplyDeleteI did like the table yellow, but that blue is soooo retroish and cool! I just painted a little wire candle holder the same blue and it just makes me smile every time I look at it! I would be super excited if you came over to link up at my Anything Goes Link Party going on from Friday at 6 MST Friday till Monday at midnight.

I have a table very similar to that which belonged to my grandmother. There have been a few times that I've thought about painting it, but for sentimental reason I never have. Your table looks lovely in the turquoise... Makes me think about painting my table again, but I know I'll end up keeping the oak.
ReplyDeleteLove this color.Looks great with those flowers too.

ReplyDeleteOh, goodness! I love this one, too! Do you share the color you use? If so, I'd love to know what it is. I'm having a terrible time finding the perfect "turquoise" aqua color.
ReplyDeleteI just happened to find your site, and OH MY! I have this exact same table, I think a bit bigger, right next to my bed. It needs a re-do so guess what I am doing this weekend. THANK YOU! your site is on so cool..can't wait to show it to my daughter and sons. We are always looking for something to re-do!
