Okay, so this is going a bit slower than I had hoped. But, what else is new, right? So as of when I am writing this, we have 7.5 of 16 doors ready to paint and 4 of 4 drawers half done. So, we're ALMOST halfway there.
So, what are we up to? To refresh your memory, this is what we are starting with, or to see part 1, you can click HERE.
Like I said before, we won't be simply painting the doors, neither will be replacing them. Instead, to add a little character to their ugly blahness, we are adding trim around the edges and paintable beadboard wallpaper to the fronts.
It's hard to believe they are the same doors!
I will be painting them. What colour? White, of course! Right now we are at a bit of a stand still. We bought all the trim they had at our local Home Hardware, and they told us they would have more in just this past Monday, but when we went in we found out that it wouldn't be in until next Monday! Slightly frustrating!
One thing I am not liking is not having doors on the cupboards, especially, since it's really the first thing that you see when you walk in. But I am sure it will be worth it in the end. Now... if only we can get some more trim!
Such a creative way to makeover your cabinets! I have been trying to summon the courage to paint my kitchen cabinets. I am afraid I will make a drippy mess. I may do a trial run on one of the bathroom vanities.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see how your cabinets turn out! What a creative way to change them up without having to purchase new doors.
ReplyDeleteYou will not recognize your kitchen when you add the redone doors. What a great idea, looking forward to seeing more later.
ReplyDeleteReally looking forward to seeing this project all done....your other work is amazing. Really wish I had the extra time to concentrate on projects like these :)
ReplyDeleteI have the same cupboards you have. Very eager to see it's progress and hoping you share tips and tricks.
ReplyDeleteDo you have pictures of the finished project? I was planning on adding trim like you did but hadn't thought about the breadboard wallpaper. Genius! Wondering what you did on the drawer fronts. Did you just use smaller trim?
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
My husband bought the same style drawers and lower cabinets for my laundry room/basement office. So far, I've just decided to paint the formica the wall color. What are you doing with your drawers? Are you refacing them with the framed bead-board, too? My drawers are a little skinny for that, so I am at a loss to figure out what to do with the oak band handles.
ReplyDeleteStill waiting on finishing your kitchen cupboards? It's been a year now, so I'm anxious to see what you did.
ReplyDeleteI have the same kitchen and my husband and I have kicked this idea around as well. Yours look fantastic and I'm so excited to show him your blog! But my question is about the sides of the cabinet. When you open them, do you see the little gap between the melamine's wooden ledge at the bottom and the new trim? That was my only problem and I couldn't figure out how to solve it! I'd love to hear or see a pic of the side of yours to get a good idea!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great transformation! Thanks!
To solve that problem I used a wood filler. Let it dry for a few hours, sand it down then paint. You can't really notice the gaps.
DeleteYou are my hero! I have these same kitchen cabinets and I hate, Hate, HATE them!!! (did I mention I hate them?).
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a lot of work, but o, what a difference. Love what you did with your kitchen!
Nancy
did you have to use any special wallpaper or glue to make them stick to the melamine? I plan on doing this for our basement suite rental.
ReplyDeleteWe just used the regular beadboard wallpaper from lowes. I didn't use glue, just wet the paper and they seem to be doing just fine. The top and the bottom trim were layered on top of the wallpaper though and then nailed down.
ReplyDeleteCynthia -- where can I find your subsequent posts of your kitchen cabinet makeover? I am stuck with those exact cabinets and found your part 1 and 2... dying to see the rest! Thanks!!!

DeleteWe are looking to by a house with these cabinets. I'd like to know what kind of trim board did you purchase for them at Home Depot? Also how did you attach the trim? Thank you! This is SUCH a helpful blog!!
ReplyDeleteI actually bought some more of it today for a project in our new house. It was 5/16" x 1-11/16" finger jointed pine. I purchased it at a Canadian store, Home Hardware. Good luck with your cabinets.
DeleteAnd I think we nailed the trim to the doors.
